The Jallianwala Bagh incident happened on April 13, 1919. Jallianwala Bagh is a ‘bagh’ or garden located close to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab.
Important Details
- On April 13th, 1919 many people gathered there to celebrate the Vaisakhi festival.
- Among these people were some who wanted to protest peacefully against the Rowlatt Act (a rule passed by British India) that was unjust in some ways.
- For example, it allowed arrests to be made without a warrant.
- British Army General Reginald Dyer took an armed force into this ‘bagh’ while the peaceful public meeting was going on.
- Then without warning, he ordered fire to be opened on the crowd.
- Many people died and many more were wounded.
- General Dyer was asked to resign (leave his position) from the Army and was sent back to England.
- The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has expressed sorrow for the incident that had taken place around the same time a hundred years back.
- They also admitted that the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 was a ‘shameful scar’ on British Indian history.
