Rescue work underway in Uttarakhand after glacier burst

Days after the glacier burst in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, rescue work is still underway.
Workers are working night and day clearing rocks and mud from the tunnel at a damaged hydroelectric plant at Tapovan in Uttarakhand.
More than 170 people are missing but only a few people have been found till now. Rescue officials are also trying to re-establish contact with 13 villages cut off due to floods. These villages lead to India’s border with China. In the meantime, a zip line is being set up to send emergency supplies to the villages.
Glacier burst
Scientists are investigating the incident. They believe a piece of a Himalayan glacier fell into the river and triggered the huge flood. The origin of the incident, they say, was a glacier on a remote 5,600-metre peak called Raunthi.
Glaciers have been melting rapidly in the Himalayan region because of global warming.
