Rolls-Royce tests hydrogen jet engine!
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Rolls-Royce is testing a jet engine that uses hydrogen as its fuel. Experts claim that these tests could lead to big changes in the aviation industry.
What is Rolls-Royce?
Rolls-Royce was a British company that made high-end cars and later made aeroplane engines.
The engine doesn’t have a lot of unusual parts. It is a Rolls-Royce gas turbine engine. It is used in many aeroplanes around the world.
This is the first time in history that hydrogen has been used to power a modern aeroplane engine. It doesn’t have a body, and all of its complex wiring and pipes are visible as it is safely attached to a testing system.
Key facts!
- The goal is to show that it is possible to run and control a jet engine with hydrogen fuel instead of jet fuel.
- In the future, Rolls-Royce hopes that hydrogen power will help the aviation industry in a big way.
- This would make it possible for the economy to grow while reducing emissions that cause climate change.
- Rolls-Royce thinks that the search for Net Zero is the main reason why hydrogen is being looked into as a possible fuel source.
- Hydrogen doesn’t have any carbon in it, so when it is burned, it doesn’t make any carbon dioxide.
- So, this is one of the many good things about hydrogen as a fuel.
- The company also believes that using hydrogen power is the best way to cut down on the pollution that short-haul flights cause.
- Also, hydrogen is better than batteries because it can produce a much higher amount of power per unit of weight.
- So far, the results of the tests that have been done have only shown that a jet engine powered by hydrogen can be started and run at slow speeds.
- From there, building a whole new engine will require more research and money.
- The planes themselves will also need to be redesigned.
- Liquid hydrogen takes up about four times as much space as kerosene.
- Someday, the early tests might be seen as the shaky start of a technological revolution in the plane business as a whole.
