Say hello to new baby Tasmanian devils born in Australia

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Tasmanian devils are animals that are found only on the island of Tasmania, which comes under Australia. This animal is a marsupial, like kangaroos and koala bears.

What are marsupials?

Marsupials are animals that carry their babies in a pocket of skin (pouch) on the mothers’ stomachs.

The Tasmanian devil is the size of a small dog. It has black fur and is known to have a bad smell and screening extremely loudly.

This animal was last seen on the main island of Australia 3000 years ago. Today, its population is getting less even in Tasmania due to a disease.

An organisation called Aussie Ark, along with some other organisations, have been trying to save it and increase its numbers. They recently announced that Tasmanian devil babies were born at the Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary in Australia. This is the first time that they have been born in mainland Australia after 3000 years.

Baby devils

Baby Tasmanian devils are called “joeys”. Aussie Ark said that about 20 more joeys will be born this year.
