Scientists discover secrets of the sun!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Hey there! Guess what? Scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) have been working super hard to figure out something really cool about the sun’s magnetic field. They want to know where it comes from and how it affects space weather.

You see, the sun has different layers, like the corona, the photosphere, and the chromosphere. Inside the sun, there are electrical currents that act like a magnetic dynamo, creating the magnetic field. It’s like the sun has its own superpower!

Now, scientists are particularly interested in something called the Solar Mean Magnetic Field (SMMF). It’s like the average value of the sun’s magnetic field that we can see from Earth. They wanted to understand how the SMMF relates to something called the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF), which is important for space weather. Space weather is like the sun’s way of throwing a party in space!

Sun’s Magnetic Field

  • So, these smart scientists looked at the SMMF at different heights in the sun’s atmosphere. They found something really interesting. The magnetic field at the chromosphere, which is just above the visible surface, is a bit lower than the magnetic field at the photosphere. It’s like the chromosphere is the shy little sibling of the photosphere!
  • To figure this out, they used fancy instruments called the Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS)/Vector Spectromagnetograph (VSM) and the Wilcox Solar Observatory. They looked at data from these instruments between 2010 and 2017. It’s like they were detectives, searching for clues!
  • By understanding the source of the SMMF and how it works, scientists can learn more about how it affects the IMF. It’s like solving a puzzle to unlock the secrets of space weather. And when we understand space weather, we can prepare for it better, just like bringing an umbrella when it’s going to rain!
  • So, to sum it all up, the scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics have made progress in understanding the sun’s magnetic field. They found that the magnetic field at the chromosphere is lower than the photosphere, which suggests that the magnetic field comes from deep inside the sun. It’s like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered!
  • Keep exploring, my little scientist friend, and who knows? Maybe one day you’ll solve some mind-boggling mysteries too! Remember, science is all about asking questions and finding the answers. So, keep your curious spirit alive and reach for the stars!
