Skeleton is an official Winter Olympics sport

Did you know there is a sport called skeleton?

Skeleton is the name of a winter sport. In this sport, an individual rides face down on a tiny low sledge and slide down in a frozen track.

Skeleton sledging is also a sport played at the Winter Olympics. It was at first, part of the 1948 Games. But was discontinued after that due to the chance of injury. It was officially revived only during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Skeleton started in Switzerland, Europe during the 1800s. The recognition of the sport officially came into being through the Federation International First State Bobsleigh et First State sledging (FIBT).

The sport today

Today’s skeleton sport is usually played on artificial ice, in an arena that is about 1, 500 metres long. Athletes participating in skeleton can reach 140 km/hr in speed.
