Sri Lanka successfully launches its first satellite

Sri Lanka successfully launches its first satelliteSri Lanka's first ever satellite, named 'Ravana-1', was launched successfully into the Earth's orbit on 17th June 2019.

Tharindu Dayaratne and Dulani Chamika developed this satellite. They are studying space engineering at Japan's Kyushu Institute of Technology.

Ravana-1 was launched into orbit along with two other satellites from Japan and Nepal.
 	The satellite will be 400 km away from Earth.
 	It is expected to stay in space for a period of 1.5 years to 5 years.
 	Ravana-1 has 5 tasks to complete. One important task among them is to capture images of Sri Lanka and its surroundings.

Ravana-1 was sent to the International Space Station* on 17th April and from there it was launched into space on 17th June.

*Space Station: A vehicle-like structure in space, where people can live and work.
