William Shatner to travel to space

Have you ever watched any of the Star Trek shows or films?

What is Star Trek?

Star Trek is a famous American science fiction show about the voyages of the starship USS Enterprise, a spacecraft in the 23rd century, which travels to find strange new worlds. It first came out in the 1960s and the show has many spinoffs, films and comic books too.

In the original 1960s Star Trek series, the lead of the show is Captain James T Kirk, played by Canadian actor William Shatner. He became very famous for his role and has many fans.

Now, ‘Captain Kirk’ will be actually heading to space! US billionaire Jeff Bezos’s space travel company Blue Origin will be taking William Shatner to travel to space on 12 October.

Shatner is 90 years old and when he goes to space, he will become the oldest person to have flown into space. This will be Blue Origin’s second spaceflight – the first had Jeff Bezos on it. The flight will have Shatner along with three other people.

The flight

Similar to the first one, the crew will travel to space on a New Shephard rocket. The journey will last about 10 minutes and will take the crew just beyond the Karman Line. This is the most widely recognised boundary between space and the earth and it lies 100 km above.

Other crew members on the flight include Blue Origin’s vice president of mission and flight operations, Audrey Powers.
