Recommended for Middle Grades

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that Cyclone Tauktae (pronounced as Tau’Te) has intensified into a cyclonic storm. The cyclone is currently centred over Lakshadweep.

Cyclone Tauktea is India’s first cyclonic storm this year. It is expected to become a “very severe cyclonic storm”, reaching wind speeds of 150 to 160 kilometres per hour by 17 May. It will likely hit the coast of Gujarat by Tuesday.

The coasts of Gujarat and Diu are under close watch. Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra are also on alert for the storm.

Alerts

Some parts of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Gujarat are already facing heavy rainfall, causing floods. Cyclone Tauktae alerts have been issued to vulnerable areas. Fishermen have been asked to not go out into the Arabian Sea for now.

More than 50 NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams are in the states in preparation. The Indian Navy is also on standby to provide support.
