India celebrates National Statistics day on 29th June on the birth date of Professor P C Mahalanobis, commemorating his invaluable contribution to India’s statistical system.

It is a branch of mathematics working with the collection, organisation, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data.

Key facts about National Statistics Day!

  • Mahalanobis is recognised as the Father of Statistical systems in India.
  • Statistics Day celebration is headed by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI).
  • The day has been celebrated, to popularize the use of Statistics in everyday life and make the public aware of how Statistics helps in shaping and framing the government’s policies.
  • This year’s theme is “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

 

  • The ministry will also release a handbook on National Indicator Framework (NIF) for measuring the progress of the SDGs and associated targets at the national level.
  • NIF will provide a possible framework for the policymakers and the administrators of various schemes and programs by the government.

  • Our government create policies based on data collected through various organisations.
  • This data forms the basis to understand the need, requirements, and issues of the public
  • Thus reliable data is a prerequisite for the overall development of a society.
