Strawberries help Odisha’s farmers self-sustain!

Recommended for India

Hey there, enthusiastic learner! Let’s dive into an interesting and exciting story about strawberries, tribal groups, and a place called Odisha. It’s like a cool adventure with lots of red and juicy fruits!

Strawberries, Tribes, Triumph!

  • Okay, so you know what a strawberry is, right? It’s that small, squishy, red fruit with those tiny yellow seeds on its skin. Yummy! Well, guess what? In a magical place called Odisha, they decided to grow lots and lots of strawberries.
  • Now, in Odisha, there are these special groups of people called tribal groups. They’re kind of like real-life jungle adventurers. They have their own ways and live in faraway places. They’re a bit shy and don’t really talk to many people from outside.
  •  Some of these tribal groups are called “Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups” or PVTGs. They don’t have much food and don’t know how to read and write a lot. One group, called the Chuktia Bhunjia tribe, is part of these PVTGs.
  • But guess what? The government of Odisha had a big idea. They thought, “Hey, let’s help these tribal groups by teaching them how to grow strawberries!” So, the farmers who usually plant paddy (that’s a kind of rice) from April to October, learned how to grow strawberries in November. They got some little plants called seedlings and even got some money to dig a water well.
  • Each family got a big piece of land, like 10 acres, and they planted around 20,000 little strawberry plants. They got help from a special group that knows about plants and water, called the department of horticulture. And guess what else? They borrowed money from some amazing ladies’ groups to hire people to work on their strawberry farms.
  • After a while, many farmers started growing strawberries with lots of encouragement from the government. But when they picked all those yummy strawberries, they had a little problem. They didn’t know where to sell them! So, the government decided to help them by connecting with big food stores.
  • And that’s not all! The government thinks that more and more people will grow strawberries in other places like Gajapati, Malkangiri, Rayagada, and Kalahandi. These places have weather that’s just right for strawberries. So, the strawberries are not just making tummies happy but also helping the tribal groups have better lives.
  • So, isn’t that an exciting story? Strawberries growing in Odisha and helping tribal groups become stronger and happier. It’s like a big adventure with juicy rewards!
