Study shows how the Montreal Protocol benefited the world

Recommended for Secondary Grades

We have read about the Montreal Protocol. This was an agreement that countries signed in 1987 to decrease the chemicals that cause depletion (lessening) of ozone in the ozone layer. These chemicals are called CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbon). They were once commonly used in aerosol sprays, refrigeration and air conditioners.

What is the ozone layer?

The ozone layer or ozone shield is a layer of gas surrounding the Earth. It absorbs most of the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation protecting us from harmful rays.

Key facts!

  • A new study says that if it wasn’t for the Montreal Protocol, the world would be on track for a collapse of the ozone layer.
  • It also says that there would have been an additional 2.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by the end of the century.
  • The scientists used computer modelling to see how the ozone layer would have been if the agreement was not signed.
  • They found that the CFC ban had avoided a “scorched Earth”, putting us all at great risk.
  • Global warming is a huge problem we face today.
  • It is also contributing to extreme weather like heatwaves and heavy rainfall and storms.
  • We are facing a climate code red today, according to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).
  • Scientists said that the Montreal Protocol is a great example of how science identifies a problem and the world comes together to solve it together.
  • They said we should do the same for climate change as well.
