N Chandrasekaran at Tata Consultancy Services Group

Chandra joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 1986 and he worked there for a few years as an intern before he was hired full time. He has never left Tata since.

At Tata, Chandra has worked for 35 years. He has held a lot of different jobs and played a big part in taking the company to new places. Chandra has been the Chief operating officer, the executive director of TCS, and the CEO of the Tata Group.

During his time at TCS, it became one of the largest employers in the private sector in India. In 2022, he became Air India’s chairman.

Privatisation of Air India

Early Days

Jehangir Ratanj Dadabhoy  (JRD) Tata founded Tata Airlines in 1932. First flights to Europe were made in 1948 when Air India International began service in 1946.

The international service was one of the first, with the government owning 49% of it and the Tatas owning 25%, and the public owning the rest. The Indian government acquired Air India in 1953. For the next 40 years, it was the most important thing in India, controlling most of the country’s airspace.

Slow Decline

During the 1994-95 opening of the aviation industry to private competitors, Air India began to lose market share as private corporations began to offer cheaper tickets.

Moreover, Air India started suffering losses every year since its merger with Indian Airlines in 2007-08. In 2012, an Air India Turnaround Plan (TAP) and an Air India Financial Restructuring Plan were approved by the government

On January 27th, the government of India invited offers for a 100% stake (full) sale of Air India.

Air India – Key focus areas in the months to come!

The key focus for Air India will be to expand its network and make it more modern as per N Chandrashekar. The fundamental areas of improvement will be service standards, on-time performance, issues with passenger complaints, and customer call centres.
