The Festival of Diwali!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Once upon a time, in the heart of India, there was a festival so bright and joyful that it could light up the darkest night. This festival was called Diwali, or ‘Deepavali 2023’, the festival of love and lights. Imagine a sky filled with stars – that’s how India looks during Diwali, with millions of lamps twinkling like tiny stars on Earth.

Listen to the news

Before the festival, everyone gets busy, much like bees in a hive. Homes are scrubbed clean, as if they are getting ready for a royal visit. People buy shiny new things, especially gold and kitchen utensils, believing these bring good luck, just like finding a four-leaf clover in a meadow.

One of the most beautiful sights is the Rangoli – a vibrant art on the ground made with colored powders or sand. Making Rangoli is like painting a rainbow on the floor, each color blending into the next, creating a carpet of dreams for the gods.

The Heart of Deepavali 2023

The main night of Diwali is a sight to behold! Families come together like flocks of birds returning to their nests. They perform Lakshmi Puja, a special prayer to Goddess Lakshmi, asking for her blessings. It’s a moment of peace and gratitude, like a silent night under a starlit sky.

After prayers, a feast unfolds. Imagine a table filled with your favorite foods, each dish more delicious than the last – that’s Diwali dinner! Then comes the fireworks, turning the night sky into a canvas of color and light, each explosion a burst of joy and celebration.

During Diwali, friends and relatives visit each other, carrying gifts and good wishes, weaving a web of love and kindness across communities. It’s like Christmas, but with the warmth of the Indian sun.

The Stories Behind the Lights

In Northern India, Diwali celebrates a hero, King Rama. His story is like a thrilling adventure book, where he defeats the evil Ravana and returns home with his queen, Sita. The people of Ayodhya, his kingdom, lit lamps to guide them home, just like lighthouses guiding ships in a stormy sea.

In Southern India, Diwali marks the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. It’s a tale of good triumphing over evil, much like a brave knight defeating a fearsome dragon.

At its heart, Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness. It teaches us that even the smallest light can banish fear and bring hope, just like the first rays of sunrise chase away the night.
