North Korea offers little respite to a construction worker. He expresses regret for being born in North Korea. He supports his family by assisting his wife’s business at the market. However, the meagre income of $4 per day is insufficient to purchase even one kilo of rice. The markets are now almost empty, and the price of food has soared. He witnesses people around him succumbing to starvation. It causes immense fear for his own family’s survival.
A working mother in Pyongyang, faces the challenges of supporting her family on meagre wages. Previously, she sold items from her shop at the market. But increased scrutiny has made it impossible to have a side-hustle. She endures hunger, hiding her poverty from others! She is haunted by memories of the devastating famine in the 1990s. Silently, she witnesses the suffering of others, with some families starving to death and the city plagued by a ruthless mentality.
The border closure not only affects the availability of food but also cuts off vital supplies. Such as fertilizers and machinery, needed for crop cultivation. Attempts to escape or even possess a Chinese phone can lead to harsh punishments, including execution.
The stories provide a glimpse into the dire situation unfolding in North Korea. Further, the border closure, combined with food shortages, restricted access to essential goods, and limited information, has left the citizens in despair. The government’s actions have worsened the plight of its people. It has also hindered their ability to survive and seek help.
