The holy month of Muharram begins
Recommended for Foundational Grades
Muḥarram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and marks the beginning of a new year. The Islamic new year is also called the Hijri new year.
It is considered to be the second most holy month after Ramzan. This year, Muharram started on 9 August.
Traditionally, during Muharram, Muslims hold processions for the first 10 days of the month to observe the death of Imam Hussein Ali at the Battle of Karbala.
Iman Hussein Ali is an important figure in Islam. He was Prophet Muhammad’s grandson as well as the third Shia Imam. Imam Hussein Ali is revered for standing up against injustice even though it cost him his life.
Who is an Imam?
In Islam, an imam is a religious leader, especially the leader of a Muslim community or the person who leads the prayers in a mosque.
The 10th day of Muharram is known as Ashura or ‘Youm-e-Ashura’.
Celebrations
Shia and Sunni Muslims observe this day in different ways – with processions, fasting and prayer and more. During the month of Muharram, some mosques also provide free meals on certain nights of the month to all people.
