The Indian Air Force gets its first woman combat pilot

Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth is now India's first woman fighter pilot who is qualified for a combat (fight). Her qualification is currently for "fully operational by day". This means that she can undertake missions by day on a fighter aircraft.

Bhawana has learned flying and manoeuvres on the older and more-difficult-to-fly, MiG 21 Bison planes, rather than the new and easier-to-handle modern fighters like Sukhoi-30MKIs or Mirage-2000s.
 	Once she qualifies for night flying during the 'moon' and 'dark phases', she will be considered a fully operational fighter pilot.
 	Bhawana has an Engineering degree in Medical Electronics from Bangalore. She is currently posted at Nal Base in Bikaner, Rajasthan

In 2015, the government decided to open up the fighter pilot stream for women on an experimental basis.

Bhawana is one of the first 3 female fighter pilots, the other two are Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh. They were selected for the Air Force fighter stream in 2016.

The first batch was selected from a batch of 125 candidates.
 	The Indian Air Force (IAF) has so far selected 6 women in fighter flying stream. It takes a lot of difficult training to succeed in this role.
