Bee Bricks – Home or nest for some

We are very excited to share with our readers the story about “Bee Bricks”. There are some cities in the United Kingdom (UK) where the city administration staff encourages people to think about “bees”. How does that happen? Simply put, the people who construct buildings and homes are encouraged to use  “Bee Bricks”.

Bee Bricks or Swiss cheese

First, let’s try and understand the concept of bee bricks.  Firstly in the species of bee, there are certain bees that like to live alone (“Solitary Bees”) and certain species of bees that live in a community (“Social Bees”).

Bee bricks look like blocks of Swiss cheese but are actually normal bricks with small holes or cavities in them. This allows solitary bees to create nests for themselves. Cool isn’t it? The cities of Brighton and Hove are home to almost 250 solitary bees.

This is cool

So, the use of bee bricks offers a welcoming room to our solitary buzzers (bees). In addition, solitary bees don’t produce honey, don’t live in a hive or have a queen. Also, since solitary bees don’t have anything to protect, they are calm and very safe around children and pets.

One must take care that there are flowers or food sources for the solitary bees nearby.

Although not everyone agrees to the use of bee bricks, we at Curious Times think it is a good alternative. If the living conditions are suitable for solitary bees, it’s a worthy alternative.
