One way scientists measure the universe’s stretchiness is by looking at a really old “photo album” – the cosmic microwave background (CMB). It’s like a snapshot of the universe when it was a baby, filled with ancient light. By studying this light, scientists figured out that the universe is flat.
Think of two train tracks that never cross, no matter how far they go – that’s what a flat universe is like. You could even think of our solar system as a flat disk, with all the planets orbiting the Sun in roughly the same plane!

The CMB gives us the big picture, but scientists like to get up close too! That’s where the cosmic distance ladder comes in. It’s like a set of rulers for measuring really far away things in space. One special kind of star, called a Cepheid variable, is super helpful.
These stars blink in a special way that tells scientists how far away they are. Think of them like lighthouses out in the cosmic ocean, helping us navigate even beyond our solar system!
The Case of the Mismatched Measurements
Here’s where things get weird. The CMB measurements say the universe is stretching at one speed, but those twinkling Cepheid stars say it’s going faster. It’s like having two clocks that always show different times!
Scientists are left wondering if something is wrong with their “instruction manual,” or if maybe there’s something they don’t understand about their cosmic rulers. Maybe there are mysteries waiting to be solved, not just about the whole universe, but much closer to home within our solar system!
The James Webb Space Telescope is like a super-powered detective on this cosmic case. It can see things way out in space, even through dust clouds, and might even help us study distant planets in other solar systems. Scientists were hoping it would solve the mystery by looking at those Cepheid stars, but even with its fancy tools, the two measurements still don’t match. It’s back to the drawing board!
