We have been reading about extreme weather events such as floods and heatwaves.

As per the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, this July was the hottest month recorded on Earth. This is since 1880 when the NOAA started keeping records.

What is the NOAA?

NOAA stands for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It is a United States government agency responsible for monitoring our climate and our environment, and taking steps to preserve them.

The global temperature in July 2021 was the highest for any July in the 142 years of records. The combined land and ocean surface temperature was 1.67 degrees F (0.93 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average of 60.4 degrees celsius.

Normally, July is normally the hottest month of the year. This means this July was the hottest of all months since 1880. This is when the NOAA started keeping records.

This July, many places, including the Western US, Eastern Europe, and Asia recorded heatwaves. Moreover, Europe also saw floods. The NOAA also highlighted the direct links between global warming and extreme weather events we are seeing more frequently.
