Tiny microplastics from our clothes are polluting the Artic OceanAccording to a recent study, the Arctic Ocean is being highly polluted by microplastics and fibres, released after we wash our clothes. Microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic pieces (less than 5 mm).

A team of scientists studied samples from 71 locations across the European and North American Arctic. They found that about 40 microplastic particles are found per cubic metre of ocean water. even though these are some of the most remote regions on Earth.

The most common types of microplastic came from synthetic (artificial) fibres like polyester. Millions of microplastics fall out every time we wash clothes made of synthetic fibres.

Studies have shown that microplastics exist in large numbers all across the world, including the Mariana Trench (the deepest part of the ocean on Earth) and Mount Everest. They are also found inside the stomachs of humans and animals.
