Summer Solstice!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Hey there! Guess what? Today is a really special day—it’s the summer solstice! That means it’s the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, where we live. Let us tell you some important things about it in a fun and interesting way!

Summer Solstice Celebration

  • So, the summer solstice only happens once a year, and it’s when the Sun is super-duper high up in the sky. It’s so high that it’s directly over a make-believe line called the Tropic of Cancer. This line goes around the Earth, a bit north of the equator. It’s like a special spotlight for the Sun!
  • When the summer solstice comes, it’s like the Sun is showing off. It stays out longer and makes our days brighter than usual. That’s why it’s called the longest day—it feels like the Sun is taking forever to go to bed!

  • Oh, and did you know that the summer solstice has other names too? Some people call it Midsummer because it’s right in the middle of the summer season. And in the northern hemisphere, it happens in June, so it’s also called the June solstice. Cool, huh?
  • Here’s another interesting thing: when the summer solstice arrives, it’s not only summer for us, but it’s also the start of winter for our friends in the southern hemisphere. It’s like a weather switcheroo!

  • Now, let’s talk about today’s sunrise and sunset time in India, a fantastic place filled with amazing colors and flavors! The Sun woke up in the capital city of New Delhi at 5:23 in the morning. Wow, that’s early! And it won’t go to bed until 7:21 in the evening. That’s almost 14 hours of daylight! We have plenty of time to enjoy the sunshine!
  • You know, the summer solstice has been a big deal for a long, long time. Many ancient peoples used to worship the Sun on this special day. They thought it was pretty awesome and wanted to show their gratitude. It’s like throwing a huge party just for the Sun!

  • But wait, there’s more! The summer solstice has a funny cousin called the winter solstice. It’s the complete opposite. While the summer solstice is the longest day, the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year. In the northern hemisphere, it happens on December 21. It’s like the Sun takes a quick nap and leaves us with shorter days.
  • So, my friend, today is a super special day—the summer solstice! Remember, it’s the longest day of the year when the Sun is way up high. We get to enjoy extra sunlight and have lots of fun! Isn’t that cool?
