The Summer Paralympics at Tokyo got a grand closing on 5 September 2021.
After a delay of one year, the Summer Paralympics had started on 24 August. At the ceremony, the president of the International Paralympics Committee, Andrew Parsons quoted: “Together against the odds, we did it”.
The closing ceremony lasted for about two hours, though, with no spectators. It included the Parade of Nations, and performances like singing, dancing, biking and roller skating. The LED lights in the stadium displayed “Thank You to all the Paralympians”.
Amidst all the fun, the Paralympic flag was formally passed on to the next organiser of the Olympics in 2024 – Paris, France. Paris’ Mayor, Anne Hidalgo accepted the flag in the excitement of hosting the 2024 Games.
All the athletes have shown a lot of courage, dedication and hard work at the Paralympics. China topped the medal tally while the UK followed in second place and the US came third.
India
Avani Lekhara represented India as the flag-bearer at the Closing Ceremony. She is the first Indian to win multiple medals in the single edition of the Games. This time, India won a total of 19 medals and it ended up at 24th position on the international medal tally. This is India’s best-ever performance at the Paralympics.
