“Travel back in time” with Google Earth and its new time-lapse feature

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Have you ever used the Google Earth app? It allows you to see different places on Earth through photos taken by satellites.

Google Earth recently added a new time-lapse video feature. It can show you how Earth has changed over the last nearly 40 years due to climate change.

What is time-lapse photography?

Time-lapse is a method of filming very slow actions. This is done by taking a series of single pictures over a period of time. The pictures are then put together to show the action happening very quickly

Details of the new feature

The new Google feature uses 24 million images taken by satellites from the past 37 years to let people “travel through time”. Just search for any place and you can see how it looked before and how it looks now. For example, through this, you can see the loss of glaciers over the years.

This is Google’s biggest update to Google Earth in four years. Anyone in the world can use it.

Google hopes to raise awareness of climate change and other environmental issues with this feature.

You can try out the time-lapse feature here.
