UN appoints Indian-origin Anita Bhatia as UN Deputy Executive Director

UN appoints Indian-origin Anita Bhatia as UN Deputy Executive DirectorAnita Bhatia, a person of Indian origin*, has been appointed the Deputy Executive Director of UN-Women (UN (United Nations) Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women).

She has also been appointed as Assistant Secretary-General for Resource Management, Sustainability and Partnerships.
 	She was appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 31st May 2019.

UN Women is the UN organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.

About Anita Bhatia

Ms. Bhatia holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Calcutta University, as well as degrees from Yale University and Georgetown University.

She has had a distinguished career at the World Bank Group, serving in various positions.
 	 She has worked in various countries in South America, Africa, Europe and Asia.

The key appointment comes less than a week after Mr. Guterres appointed Indian Army officer Lieutenant General Shailesh Tinaikar as the new Force Commander of the UN Mission in South Sudan.
