Vanilla flavour comes from an orchid flower

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

When you are eating vanilla ice cream, did you ever imagine that the flavour comes from a flower?

Where do vanilla plants grow?

They only grow in hot climates close to the equator. The first people to grow vanilla were the Totonac people, who lived in Mexico.

Key facts!

  • Yes, vanilla comes from a flower – an orchid! There are over 150 kinds of vanilla plants. The main orchid used for vanilla is called Vanilla planifolia.
  • The vanilla orchid is one of the few types of orchids that produce fruit.
  • The flavour is extracted from this fruit.
  • The Aztec people also started growing it later. It was likely from them that Spanish people brought it to Europe in the 1520s.
  • The Aztecs named the vanilla fruit tlilxochitl, which means “black flower”.
  • This is because the fruits turn black and dry after they are picked.
  • However, today, most of the vanilla flavour we eat is made in chemical laboratories.
  • The real flavour from the plant itself is very expensive.

The Youtube channel “Life in Florida” shares what are some of the things that need to be considered before expecting flowers from vanilla orchids.
