VB Variant – New HIV Strain

HIV triggered a worldwide pandemic in 1981. Now, scientists have discovered a variation (“VB Variant”) of the HIV virus that triggered a pandemic. The origin of this variant dates back to the 1990s.

What is HIV?

HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) is an infection that causes AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome).

Although the variant is highly infectious, the effectiveness of modern treatments makes it less likely to be widespread. The scientists believe there is no reason to panic.

VB Variant

The scientists have published their analysis in the “Science” journal. Their analysis shows that patients infected with this variant had 3.5 to 5.5. higher level of virus. However, after starting medication, the immune system of patients with VB variant recovered just fine.

Scientists believe early diagnosis followed by treatment is key for individuals at risk of infection. In addition, researchers believe that the virus could evolve to become more infectious and widespread. They cautioned that the belief “viruses become milder with evolution” just demonstrates overconfidence.

As with other virus variations such as Omicron, the evolution of the “VB Variant” could result in more virulent variants.

Spread

To date, 109 people have been infected with the VB variant and amongst them, four are living outside the Netherlands but in western Europe.
