Have you ever seen a humpback whale?

What are humpback whales?

Humpack whales are one of the biggest whales in the world. They can grow up to 18 metres long and weigh about 40,000 kgs (about the same weight as 7 African elephants).

However, despite their large size, humpbacks are known to be very gentle and intelligent. Sadly, today, they are in less number today and need to be protected.

Humpbacks in the island of Tonga

Humpback whales usually come to the island country of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean to have babies. This is because the area is safe and far away from dangerous animals like sharks.

Here, in Tonga, humans can also play with humpback whales in the water. Of course, they have to follow strict rules but they can get close to the whales sometimes.

Recently, a very lucky swimmer was visited by a playful male humpback whale. The whale was like a dog, rolling over for a belly rub. The whole visit lasted for 18 minutes. The swimmer was very happy and really enjoyed herself.
