Weather update -Temperatures drop in north India, cyclonic storm in south India

Weather Update – North India

Winter has arrived in north India. Delhi’s minimum temperature dropped to 6.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday. This is the lowest temperature for Delhi in the month of November since 2003.

Jammu and Kashmir capital Srinagar saw the temperature dip to -3 degrees Celsius. This was the coldest night of the season.

Several districts in Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh also saw temperature fall down to single digit. Parts of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan also saw lower-then-normal cold weather.

Parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir could see heavy snowfall on 25 November.

If the minimum temperature continues to be the same, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD could declare a cold wave. For the plains, the IMD declares a cold wave when the minimum temperature is 10 degrees Celsius or below for two consecutive days.

Weather Update – South India

In south India, the very severe cyclonic storm “Gati” is expected to hit the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast in the next 24 hours.

Cyclone Gati is likely to make landfall between Karaikal in Puducherry and Mamallapuram in northern Tamil Nadu on 24 and 25 November.

Ships and fishermen have been warned to avoid going out to sea till 25 November.

Heavy rains are expected over isolated places of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday and Wednesday. A red warning for heavy rain has been issued for Tamil Nadu for Wednesday.

Heavy rain is also expected over isolated places of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh over the next few days.

Air quality continues to be poor or very poor over northern, central, eastern and western India.
