What’s in a word – Tulip!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Have you ever seen a tulip? It is a plant with a large, brightly coloured, bell-shaped flower on a stem that grows from a bulb.

Fun facts about Tulip!

  • The tulip is the national flower of the Netherlands. You can find them in many colours and tourists come from all over the world to see the flowers.

  • However, the name of the flower itself is from a different country – Turkey.
  • The word ‘tulip’ comes from the Turkish word tülbent (meaning: turban), which comes from the Persian word dulband (meaning: turban).
  • The flowers were introduced from Turkey to Europe in 1559. It was called so because the flower looks like the turban headwear that Turkish people wore (which is also popular in India).
  • The Turkish tülbent led to the word tulpe in the Dutch and French languages. This eventually became ‘tulip’ in the English language.
  • In India, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Kashmir is also very popular. It is the largest tulip garden in Asia.
