Recommended for Foundational Grades

The Alabai is a type of Central Asian shepherd dog. It is also known as the ‘wolf crusher‘ dog. It is one of the largest dogs in the world. It is used to guard animals as well as people.

This dog is found in the country of Turkmenistan in Central Asia. People of the country are very proud of this dog. There is even a big golden statue of the dog in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.

Recently, Turkmenistan declared a national holiday to celebrate the Alabai or wolf crusher dog! This holiday falls on the last Sunday of April.

The holiday is on the same day as a festival that celebrates another animal – a horse called Akhal-Teke.

Turkmenistan’s President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, is famous for his love of dogs. He has even written a book and poems about the wolf crusher or Alabai dogs.

There are so many animals in the world. Some live on land, some on trees, some in water and some fly up in the sky. Some are fun and playful and some quite dangerous too. Sometimes they work in teams but some prefer to be alone. What do you love most about animals? Read our animal news for kids for more interesting animal stories.
