World Consumer Rights Day – 15 March!

Recommended for Middle Grades

Every year, the consumer movement celebrates World Consumer Rights Day on March 15. This is a way to make people all over the world aware of their rights and needs.

Do you know who a 'consumer' is?

A consumer is a person who buys things or uses services.

We are all consumers because we buy and use things all the time.  People who celebrate the day have a chance to make sure that everyone’s rights as a consumer are respected and protected. They also have a chance to speak out against market abuses and social injustices that hurt those rights.

Inspiration of World Consumer Rights Day!

Customers’ rights must be respected and protected at all times. Former US President John F. Kennedy served as an inspiration for the creation of World Consumer Rights Day. On March 15, 1962, he became the first world leader to openly address the problem of consumer rights.

The theme of World Consumer Rights Day – 2022!

The theme of the day this year is “Fair Digital Finance”. As per the Global Findex Database in the developing world, the percentage of account owners who send and receive money digitally has gone from 57% in 2014 to 70% in 2017.

Digital finance has its positives and negatives. There are more opportunities, but also more risks that can lead to unfair results for the people who use it. Digital money can make it more likely that the most vulnerable people will be left behind.

This year’s World Consumer Rights Day will start the first-ever global conversation about what people want when it comes to fair digital money.
