Satyajit Ray, born May 2, 1921, Kolkata, India—Bengali motion-picture director, writer, and illustrator who brought the Indian cinema to world recognition with Pather Panchali (1955) .Satyajit Ray won an oscar award at the 64th Academy Awards in 1992. Ray was given an Honorary Award for his lifetime of achievement in filmmaking.
