My Expressions

‘The Leap’ By Anjana Unni Krishnan, The Choice School

Our online journey started with our Summer Camp, as we were to close our session on Zoom. The good news about this summer camp was that teachers and students got familiar with virtual playing, learning, yoga and activities. In April, we did not expect this to go on for such a long time.

We did not face any resistance or any particular challenge when the decision to start the academics online happened. I met all the parents and we discussed how this was the best way forward.

We looked at various platforms, Zoom was the popular choice, as it was very user-friendly. We use it alongside our Learning Management Systems. We trained all our teachers and we were handholding parents and children.

The first challenge was for teachers to accept that we have to teach online. But they eventually came along. The biggest challenge is network connectivity and teachers also go through those challenges. The lesson plans had to change and the presentation had to change. An hour’s class requires so many hours of planning.

The content has improved a lot. The teachers had to browse and research videos, and power points. They have to be interactive, colourful. Students need to be engaged. The new norm of bunking classes can be audio-video off if the child has not been engaged well.

Learning outcomes are better. You ask students, they will remember and tell you. But ‘writing’ has got missed. Students would have lost the practice of writing. We do give writing work, but it may not be enough.

We will carry a lot of content and processes to our future learning formats and these audio-video resources will become part of our future curriculum.

A lot of cooperation around monitoring the child’s activities, building values is also required on the part of parents as they are at home.

What I like about Curious Times is the opportunity that students get. Students are talented, but their talent gets restricted to school. However, at Curious Times, they are being exposed to the world.
