UNICEF guides teachers as schools reopen

UNICEF is guiding teachers, as the schools are reopening. UNICEF has shared guidance on the opportunities, and how to bridge the learning gap.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students have faced great losses with school closures and staying at home. Despite online learning, staying at home has affected the mental health of children.

As we see schools in all countries and in India reopen, there is a communication gap between the students and teachers, which has developed due to lack of physical classes. Many children are finding it difficult to cope with their studies. Parents and teachers should not take it lightly.

It is becoming extremely important for parents and teachers to know what is going on in the young minds of children. Children should be able to tell us their concerns and problems without being scared.

Unicef has recommended that teachers should take steps to lessen the problems of the students, and help them cope with mental health issues, social issues if any.

UNICEF guidance to teachers as schools reopen

Teachers are the important pillars of the education system. The pandemic has affected them as well. However, they have picked up skills to stay connected and teach and engage through digital modes.

UNICEF has issued guidelines for teachers as the schools reopen. The teachers should follow these guidelines in order to bridge the learning loss.

  1. Make children aware about COVID-19: Make the children aware about the virus by providing the factual information. Tell them the safety protocols to follow while they are in school. Talk with them calmly to make them comfortable in conversing.
  2. Listen to their concerns and problems: The school closures, the ban on playing in the playground have affected the mental growth of the children. They have learnt to keep things to themselves. In this scenario, a teacher should listen to the problems of the students. The teachers should motivate the students to speak with their friends and teachers and solve the problems collectively.
  3. Ask suggestions from the students to make the classes interesting: As both the teachers and students have come back to school after a long break, the teachers should ask students’ suggestions in order to modify the study methods. Ask the students to decorate classroom walls, or seek their help in understanding some concepts.
  4. Keep an eye on their behaviour: Teachers should keep an eye on the behaviour of the students. Make sure if they have to say something, you lend ears to them. Help them solve their problems.
  5. Encourage games and sports: Not only academic courses, but games also play a very important role in the overall development of the children. The teachers should encourage children to get enough to play and socialize with their friends within the safety protocols.
  6. Be your students’ model: They say, children do what they see. The teachers should present themselves as a good example to their students.
  7. Check how children are doing: As you meet the students after a long gap, make sure to know about their wellbeing. They may find it difficult to adapt the new environment and the revised curriculum. So, the teachers should ensure that the students are comfortable and allow them to connect with their surroundings and friends.

UNICEF guidance to the teachers will be handy as teachers have a lot of responsibilities post-school reopening.

Students’s Responsibilities

Students have some responsibilities to adapt to the new situation and blend within it. They should share their concerns with their teachers.

The students should also find out ways to make their study sessions interactive and knowledgeable. It’s not only the duty of teachers but also of the parents and students, to make learning easy and interesting.

Parents should encourage their children to adopt the new changes, now that the schools are reopening. They should talk to their chidlren and help them in their studies. It will encourage the children to study well.
