United Nations Security Council adopts resolution for safeguarding education
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted a resolution on 29 October 2021 for the protection of education in armed conflict (war within a country or with another country).
The new resolution is called Resolution 2601. Resolution 2601 won the support of all the 15 members of the United Nations Security Council. India (who is a member of the UNSC) also voted in favour of Resolution 2601. The resolution disapproves of the violations of international laws which are in place to stop the use of children in armed conflict. And it also stands against other forms of violence including killing, and abductions.
Resolution 2601 disapproved of the attacks against schools and hospitals during armed conflicts. This new resolution urges the member states of the UN security council to develop effective measures to prevent the threat of attacks against the schools and other education facilities.
Goals of Resolution 2601
Resolution 2601 by the United Nations Security Council asks its member states to protect schools. They emphasize making schools violence-free and protecting the students so that they can enjoy their right to education. The also resolution emphasized the importance of access to education to all the students equally.
Moreover, the UN security council also seek the help of the member states to take the necessary steps and action to provide education facilities to refugee children and to those who have suffered from the armed conflict. It also pointed out the need of introducing distance learning and digital technology, for the continuation of education during armed conflicts.
