Recommended for Secondary Grades
Sri Lanka is in a state of emergency for the second time in less than a month amid anti-government protests. President Gotbaya Rajapaksa declared an emergency on 1st April 2022 amidst the shortage of food, fuel, and power supply.
The decision comes after weeks of demonstrations calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government. The Prime Minister was under pressure to step down as the working population launched protests.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his elder brother, Prime Minister Mahinda, have refused to step down in the face of rising international pressure.
Reasons for the emergency declaration!
Sri Lanka is struggling with food and electricity shortages, forcing the country to seek help from neighbouring countries. The economic slowdown has been attributed to foreign exchange shortages. One of the causes cited by experts is the weakening of the tourism industry due to COVID-19.
Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets across Sri Lanka, as the government has run out of money to pay for essential imports. Moreover, the price of essential commodities has skyrocketed, and there are severe shortages of fuel, medicines, and electricity.
People are unable to buy the things of daily use. The tight economic situation has led to protests amongst the people of Sri Lanka.
