Kashmiris celebrate Pheran Day!

Chillai Kalan is the local name for the harshest spell of winter in the Kashmir Valley. Pheran Day is a holiday that marks the start of this 40-day spell.

What is Pheran?

The traditional dress of Kashmir Valley is the pheran. It is made of two gowns that are worn on top of each other.

What is Chillai Kalan?

Locals in Kashmir call the 40-day period (21 Dec – Jan 29) of harsh winter Chillai Kalan.

Pheran Day aims to popularise the long, loose garment that protects locals from the cold in subzero conditions.

  • The promotional event piques interest and encourages people to wear pherans.
  • On Pheran Day, the Army also put on a unique ramp show at the Srinagar International Convention Centre.

  • It’s a breakfast treat made of ground pork and served fresh.
  • In addition, it is a traditional winter dish that is made by pounding mutton into a paste.
  • Thereafter it is cooked with a variety of rich and fragrant spices.
