As a direct result of India’s initiative, the United Nations General Assembly has decided to designate the year 2023 as the “International Year of Millet. The Indian government has officially initiated the celebration of the International Year of Millets.

A variety of events will take place all over the nation to encourage the cultivation and consumption of the so-called “Nutri-cereal”. The events will be held all throughout the year to promote and spread awareness about the benefits of millet for the cultivator, consumer, and climate.

These events will be held by the Central Ministries, State Governments, and Indian Embassies.

  • Millets, according to a public announcement made by the government, will also play a significant role in the G20 conference.
  • Millets are a type of cereal crop that belongs to the larger category of small-grained cereals that are used for both food and fodder.
  • There exist about 6,000 distinct variations of these grains.
  • According to experts, they are said to be one of the oldest foods known to mankind.
  • In addition to the first cereals to be farmed for domestic purposes.
  • Because of the exceptionally high nutritional content of these foods, the Union administration decided to rebrand them as “Nutri-cereals”.

Agricultural Benefits of Millet!

  • Farmers can also benefit from cultivating millet because millet requires less fertile land and water.
  • Also, the crop does rather well even when grown on dry ground.
  • They require a shorter growing season when compared to other important crops.
  • Moreoever they are adaptable enough to be produced in intercropping or under mixed cropping with oil seeds and pulses.
  • Millet crops may also be grown without the excessive use of fertilisers and pesticides.
  • Furthermore, they are also able to withstand extreme weather conditions.
  • Millet also has a small carbon and water impact.

Health benefits of Millet!

  • Millets are superior to rice and wheat in terms of their nutritional value because they contribute more than one nutrient to the diet.
  • Millets are an excellent source of many minerals and vitamins, including thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, and niacin.
  • They are also high in dietary fibre, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.
  • Additionally, millet does not contain gluten.
