Women officers in the Indian Army have been promoted to the rank of Colonel. Thus, they will be able to head Army units for the first time.
This will bring them on par with their male counterparts, who currently hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

The job of a colonel is to oversee forces and paramilitary groups.
A lieutenant colonel can be in charge of hundreds of soldiers as a Battalion Commander or work as a general staff officer.
Nearly a hundred women officers have been promoted to the rank of Colonel.
This paves the way for them to become eligible to command units in their respective arms and services for the first time.
