Daydreaming could assist in learning!
Recommended for Middle Grades
A new study suggests that daydreaming can really be beneficial to learning.
As distractions occur, our concentration begins to deteriorate. But no matter how hard we try, the focus of our attention will always wander.
Some studies have shown that gaps in concentration are an indication that our brains are overwhelmed.
What is daydreaming?
Daydreaming is cheerful thinking about something you’d rather be doing or want to do.
Key facts!
- Researchers wanted to find out where our minds go when we lose focus.
- And is it possible that sometimes getting distracted can help you learn?
- In an experiment, a group of students had to sort the letters and numbers that showed up on a computer screen into groups.
- The participants were told to ignore the distracting symbols that were around these items.
- As was to be expected, the audience’s attention went back and forth between being focused and being pulled away.
- People’s attention widened when they weren’t paying attention, so they could see the symbols that really looked like letters or numbers.
- This gave their brains an extra clue about what was on the screen.
- People who lost their focus more often were actually better at learning the patterns that the symbols showed.
- This is because their answers were faster and more accurate.
- When the researchers looked at each participant individually, they saw that learning was more obvious when the participants were not paying attention.
- This was another cool thing that was found.
- Scientists say that the results of the experiment show that sometimes it can be good to not pay as much attention.
- But it might be good for the process as a whole to switch between times of intense focus and times of less intense focus.
