Aussies win their sixth T20 World Cup Championship!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Team Australia has won the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup. The best team in the world scored 156 runs before they lost six wickets. Beth Mooney had the most runs of 74 not out.

South Africa tried to catch up to the score, but a great bowling performance stopped them.

Australia now has six Women’s Twenty20 World Cup trophies because of their victory.

Under the direction of Meg Lanning, they won tournaments in 2018, 2020, and now 2023, making it a “three-peat.”

Key facts!

  • Australia’s bowlers were tasked with defending a target of 157.
  • They gave up just 22 runs in the Powerplay.
  • Marizanne Kapp was out for 11 runs off Ash Gardner.
  • She was caught by Brown as South Africa struggled to increase their scoring rate.
  • With 105 runs still needed at drinks and ten overs left to play, South Africa had a ways to go before they were successful.
  • Laura Wolvaardt hit big shot after big shot on her way to 61 runs off 48 balls.
  • Her brilliance posed a threat to South Africa’s chances of winning the match.
  • However, Megan Schutt was able to remove Wolvaardt, and Jess Jonassen was able to clean up the potentially dangerous Chloe Tryon (25 runs from 23 balls).
  • But it was not enough for South Africa to meet the required rate of scoring in the death overs.
  • The final score was Australia winning by a comfortable margin of 19 runs, adding yet another piece of hardware to the already stuffed trophy cabinet of the national team.
