The district of Bhiwani in Haryana, India has earned the nickname ‘Little Cuba.’ It is to its outstanding success in producing champions in the sport of boxing.
The district has been the hub of boxing for over three decades. Importantly, it has produced many national and international level champions.

- Nitu Ghanghas is one of the latest district champions.
- She is a shining example of the growing popularity of women’s boxing.
- In some boxing academies more girls than boys register.
- Nitu was not initially interested in boxing, but her father, Jai Bhagwan, pushed her to take it up the sport.
- She managed to win cash awards at various events.
- Further, she also expects a promotion after her gold medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championships.
- Bhiwani has more than 30 boxing academies.
- Nitu’s coach, Jagdish Singh, estimates both men and women, from his academy alone have won 19 world championship titles.
- This includes an Olympic bronze, 290 international medals, and 600 national medals.
- In addition to five Arjuna Awards and six Bhim Awards.
- However, the Olympic medal has so far eluded Haryana’s women’s boxers.
- But the gold medals won by Nitu and Saweety Boora from Haryana at the Women’s World Boxing Championships could be another turning point for the game.
