Tuk-tuks in Bangladesh turn into power plants!
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
In Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, the streets are filled with noise from honking horns, ringing bells, and roaring cars.
A Bangladeshi company called SOLshare has seen a chance in all of this chaos. They want to use the 2.5 million electric tuk-tuks, which are open cars with three wheels, as a “virtual power plant.”
Important Details
- The electric tuk-tuks vehicles have leftover electricity in their batteries when they return to the garage at night.
- SOLshare has been working with local garages to upgrade their batteries to smart, lithium-ion batteries.
- These batteries are equipped with digital chips that collect data on the battery’s performance.
- Also, the power left over in these batteries can supply up to 20% of the country’s energy needs when demand is high.
- SOLshare also has peer-to-peer solar-powered microgrids.
- These microgrids allow people without solar panels to buy extra energy from other people in the community.
- Importantly, these innovations come at a pivotal time for Bangladesh’s energy sector.
- As a nation, Bangladesh is highly susceptible to floods, droughts, and storms due to climate change.
- SOLshare aspires to become “Asia’s largest virtual utility provider” through its different projects.
- The company also thinks that its model could “play a positive role” in countries like Thailand and India that have a lot of electric three-wheel vehicles.
