India’s VR needs safety rules!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Well, hello there, young seeker! You know what’s happening in India? The virtual reality (VR) market is booming! But guess what? The safety standards that usually keep us protected are missing for VR headsets.

These headsets take you to a whole new world, but they can be a bit risky without proper safety rules.

Virtual Reality Safety: Proceed with Caution!

  • VR headsets are mostly used for gaming, but companies like Meta and Apple want to create a special online space called the ‘metaverse’ where people can interact with virtual avatars. Sounds cool, right? According to a report, the VR and augmented reality (AR) industries could be worth a whopping $14.07 billion by 2027!
  • Now, here’s the interesting thing. Electronics like phones, laptops, TVs, and game consoles have to go through safety tests and get approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) before they can be sold. But VR headsets? Nope, they don’t have to follow these rules. It’s like they got a free pass!
  • There was a meeting where customs officials talked about this issue. They noticed that the safety requirements for VR headsets were unclear. The BIS standards for gaming consoles didn’t cover VR headsets, so importers didn’t think they needed approval. But they should!
  • Here’s what we can gather from all this. While VR headsets are super fun, they can also be a bit risky. They block your view of the outside world and use motion tracking to make you feel like you’re really in the virtual world. Some people even get sick from it, like feeling seasick on a boat!
  • So, my little friend, even though VR is exciting, we need to be careful. The government is still thinking about safety standards for VR headsets. They formed a special committee to look into it and make recommendations. Until then, it’s up to us and our grown-ups to make sure we use VR headsets safely.
  • Remember, laughter and fun are great, but our safety comes first! Let’s hope that soon we’ll have proper rules in place to protect us in the VR world. Stay curious, stay safe, and keep exploring the wonders of technology!
