USA and UNESCO together!
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Well, hello, curious mind! Guess what? Jill Biden, the U.S. first lady, went to a place called UNESCO in Paris. They had a special ceremony to raise the American flag, and everyone clapped and sang the national anthem. Dr. Biden talked about how it’s important for the U.S. to work with other countries to protect our culture and help kids learn all over the world.
It’s like a big team where lots of countries work together! Dr. Biden was so proud to be a part of it. She said, “We are so proud to rejoin UNESCO,” and she even joked a little because she used to be a teacher, so she’s a bit biased about education.
US Rejoins UNESCO: Global Unity for Education & Culture
- UNESCO is like a club with 193 countries, and they all voted to let the U.S. be a member again. Now the U.S. is the 194th member, and they own a flag at the club!
- The head of UNESCO, Ms. Azoulay, said that having the U.S. back is super important, not just for the club but for the whole world. She talked about how all the countries need to work together to be stronger and make the world a better place.
- Oh, and guess who else was there? Forest Whitaker, the actor! He said that peace through education is really important, and UNESCO helped make it possible.
- The U.S. left the club a few years ago because they were upset about some things, but now they came back because they want to be friends again. They used to give a lot of money to the club, but then they stopped, and now they’re starting to pay back the money they owe. It’s like when you borrow your friend’s toy and then give it back later.
- This is the second time the U.S. has come back to the club, like taking a break and then rejoining. It happened once before in the 1980s!
- Dr. Biden is a teacher, so she really cares about education. She’s also visiting some special places in France to honor the history and culture that the U.S. shares with France. Like a cemetery for soldiers who bravely fought in a war and a beautiful site called Mont-Saint-Michel.
- So, you see, this was a happy and important event where everyone is working together like one big team. And Dr. Biden is making sure education and culture are protected and celebrated all around the world. Isn’t that cool?
