Sneha Chakraborty’s Mural Art Promotes Mental Health Awareness

Recommended for Middle Grades

Sneha Chakraborty’s journey across India with her “Travel and Paint: India Tour” is more than just a trip—it’s a vibrant mission to spread mental health awareness through art. Partnering with the Mind & Matter Charitable Trust, Sneha collaborates with NGOs and local businesses to transform public spaces with thought-provoking murals.

India’s rich tradition of mural painting dates back to ancient cave art, illustrating the country’s artistic evolution. The word “mural” itself comes from the Latin “murus,” meaning wall, and these large, permanent artworks transform blank surfaces into powerful canvases for storytelling and social commentary.

Sneha’s Artistic Roots

Growing up in Gujarat, Sneha’s passion for drawing and painting began early. Her first foray into art was learning mehendi designs, a skill that not only nurtured her creativity but also earned her first paycheck. “I’ve always been an artist,” she says. “Everyone has an artist within them, but I held onto my creative side because I enjoyed it.”

Frequent relocations due to her father’s job as a mining engineer exposed her to diverse cultures and landscapes, deeply influencing her art. “Nature is my favorite canvas,” Sneha shares. From the hills of Assam to the snowy landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir, each new place brought fresh inspiration.

Sneha’s nationwide art tour is her way of giving back, blending her love for art with a mission to promote mental well-being. Partnering with the Mind & Matter Charitable Trust, which focuses on mental health awareness, especially for underprivileged children, Sneha’s murals highlight the profound connection between art and mental health.

“Art, beauty, and culture are closely tied to mental well-being,” says Deepika Appaiah, the founder of the NGO. In Coorg, Sneha’s mural pays tribute to NGOs like Mind & Matter, showcasing how art can ignite conversations about mental health.

The Impact of Art

Sneha’s murals aren’t just visually striking; they bring hope and inspiration. “The buzz of the street and interactions with passersby fuel me,” Sneha explains. She creates her murals in bustling streets and serene towns alike. This work allows her to connect with people and spread a message of mental health awareness.

One of her favorite moments came from painting in Haryana. “The people were friendly and welcoming, especially in Narnol,” she recalls. “I met a woman who owned a small business and employed other women. She empowered them to be financially independent. I wouldn’t have known this if I hadn’t visited.”

Sneha’s art is as diverse as her experiences. She doesn’t bind herself to a single style, embracing each piece’s uniqueness. “Art holds a power beyond measure,” she says. “It can shape societies, challenge norms, and provoke thought.”

Her inspiration flows from the dance between humanity and nature. Her art reflects both the world around her and her introspective explorations. She journeys from bustling cities to charming villages, partnering with NGOs and local businesses to create a mosaic of stories across India.

Fun and Inspiration

On a lighter note, Sneha imagines how Da Vinci and Picasso would thrive today with modern technology. “They would be using tech left and right to explore,” she says, envisioning these masters embracing social media to stand up for themselves and encourage others.

Whatever role is required of her, Sneha is ready. Armed with her colors, paints, brushes, and a treasure trove of creative ideas, she embraces every challenge with the vibrant spirit of an artist. Through her work, Sneha Chakraborty not only beautifies walls but also brings mental health awareness to the forefront, one mural at a time.
