World Malaria Day is celebrated every year on the 25th of April to raise awareness among people about Malaria.

“Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement” is the theme for World Malaria Day 2023. This theme emphasises how important it is to invest resources. In addition to coming up with new strategies, and take actions to reach the goal of zero malaria.

The theme shows that a lot of success has been made in reducing the burden of malaria in many parts of the world. However there is still a long way to go to reach the goal of eliminating malaria. This needs long-term legislative commitment, more fun, and..

Malaria

  • It is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites. These parasites are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
  • The first symptoms are fever, headache, and chills. It takes 10-15 days to diagnose malaria, after the mosquito bite.
  • In 2017, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria in 87 countries.
  • Since it’s preventable and curable, it is said that each year around 4,35,000 people die due to Malaria globally.

Malaria in Africa

  • The WHO African Region carries a high share of the global malaria burden. In 2017, this region had 92% of malaria cases and 93% of malaria deaths.
  • Malawi is one of the three countries to pilot WHO’s vaccination project. Kenya and Ghana are the other two countries which will be covered under the project in the upcoming days.
  • The project aims to immunize 1,20,000 children aged below 2 years.
