Indian Navy deploys women on warships for first time in 24 years
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
For the first time in 24 years, women officers have been deployed aboard Indian Navy warships. ‘Deploy‘ means to put soldiers or weapons in a position where they are ready to fight.
Two women officers each are now serving aboard the two Indian Navy warships. The warships are aircraft carrier Vikramaditya and fleet tanker Shakti. Their posting began in December last year.
INS Vikramaditya is India’s only aircraft carrier. The two women officers on it are serving as a logistics officer and air traffic controller. On INS Shakti, they have been deployed as a logistics officer and as a doctor.
Women in the Indian Navy
- Among the three branches of the Indian military (Army, Navy and Air Force), the Indian Navy has the highest percentage of women (6.5%).
- The last time the Indian Navy had last deployed women on a warship was on the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Jyoti in 1997.
- As we celebrated International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate this new achievement by the officers. We offer our congratulations to them!
