China and Russia complete their first cross-river railway bridge

Recommended for Middle Grades

Hey there, curious kids! We’ve got some exciting news for you. China and Russia have teamed up to build an amazing new bridge that connects their countries.

Can you believe it? It’s a railway bridge that stretches over the mighty Amur River, right on the border between them!

Important details

  • This bridge has a fancy name – the China-Russia Tongjiang-Nizhneleninskoye Bridge, or simply the Amur River Bridge. It’s a whopping 2,215 meters long! Can you imagine how many school buses lined up that would be? It took them a whole seven years to build this gigantic bridge. That’s like spending your entire elementary school life on one project!
  • Guess what? This bridge will become fully operational in the year 2022. That’s not too far away! Once it’s up and running, it will link Tongjiang city in China to Nizhneleninskoye, a town in Russia.
  • Tongjiang is in a province called Heilongjiang, and its capital city is Harbin. You know what Harbin is famous for? Its annual snow and ice festival! Imagine all the cool sculptures they must have there.
  • Here’s something even more mind-blowing. This new railway bridge will connect China’s northeast railway network with the Russian Siberian Railway, which happens to be the longest railway route in the whole wide world. Isn’t that incredible? You could potentially take a train ride all the way from China to Russia and have the adventure of a lifetime!
  • But wait, there’s more! This isn’t the only bridge between China and Russia. They built a road bridge in 2019 that connects Heihe in China to Blagoveshchensk in Russia. And guess what else? These two cities are even working on a cross-national-border cable car. Can you imagine soaring through the sky and crossing the border in a cable car? Talk about an unforgettable experience!
  • Oh, and did we mention that the Tongjiang-Nizhneleninskoye Bridge is part of China’s Belt and Road initiative? This super cool initiative aims to connect Asia to Europe. It’s like creating a big road map for countries to work together and make traveling and trading easier. So, this bridge is just one piece of a much bigger puzzle!
  • So, there you have it, our curious friends. China and Russia have come together to build an amazing bridge that will connect their countries and bring people closer. Who knows what other incredible projects they might have in store? The world is full of surprises and adventures just waiting to be explored!
